As the benefits of mindfulness are becoming more widely accepted, and it continues to grow as a practice and influence in our culture, there’s no shortage of resources available to help you begin your own mindfulness journey. These resources can vary in cost and commitment level—from free articles, apps, podcasts, and e-books, to full-length books, one-day workshops, week-long retreats, and 8-week classes.
The variety of formats available make it easy for would-be students to find a good fit, no matter their schedule or preferred learning style.
We understand that everyone learns differently, and that some people might be able to read a book and have the information they need to make meaningful change on their own. And there are many good books on mindfulness to choose from! However, there are also many good reasons to take a mindfulness class. Here are a few.
In-Person Learning from a Trained Instructor
Perhaps, like many people, you’re not a self-educator; that is, you can’t just choose a topic of interest, gather the necessary materials, and set a schedule to successfully learn on your own. This isn’t a character flaw; it’s just the way you process information.
For those who thrive with a little guidance, it can be much more fulfilling and effective to take part in a formal class. Having undergone extensive training and established their own practice, the teachers can share their experiences, speak to you as an individual, and be available to support you throughout the class.
Accountability and Consistency
As with any habit or lifestyle change, it can be difficult to go it alone. Getting started might be the hardest part. Signing up for a class and investing your time and money keeps you “on the hook” for doing the work to get the results you’re seeking.
Alternatively, maybe you’re quite motivated to learn, but it’s not as easy for you to then change course toward a lifestyle you want to adopt.
Taking a class gives you tried-and-true materials, a schedule, accountability, and consistency to help you stay true to your commitment.
Learning in Community
In a class setting, not only will the instructor be a support and guide on your mindfulness journey, but you also get a built-in community of peers who are taking the same journey as you at the same time. It’s an amazing opportunity to learn from other human beings who bring their unique stories and experiences to the class. It reminds us of the beauty of diversity, the rawness of being alive, and that we’re not alone in our struggles. The interactions among students are often among the most powerful moments in the class.
